Climate emergency

牛津词典（Oxford Dictionaries）选出了“气候紧急状态”作为2019年度热词。

Climate emergency is defined as ‘a situation in which urgent action is required to reduce or halt climate change and avoid potentially irreversible environmental damage resulting from it.’
“气候紧急状态”的定义为，需要采取紧急行动以缓解或阻止气候变化，避免由此造成的潜在不可逆转的环境损害的形势。
评选原因
今年，公众对气候关注的显著提高，及其对世界各地产生的影响，引发了联合国秘书长所说的“这个时代的决定性问题”（the defining issue of our time）的大量讨论。
牛津词典研究表明，人们在表达有关气候的信息和想法时，使用的词汇或短语明显增多，而“气候紧急状态”这一词的增幅尤其显著。

In 2018, climate did not feature in the top words typically used to modify emergency, instead the top types of emergencies people wrote about were health, hospital, and family emergencies. These suggest acute situations of danger at a very personal level, often relating to the health of an individual.

“Climate strike”, defined as “a form of protest in which people absent themselves from education or work in order to join demonstrations demanding action to counter climate change,” was first registered by Collins in 2015, to coincide with the Climate Change conference in Paris, where a mass protest took place.

Usage of the word “climate strike” exploded in the last year partially thanks to protests around the world inspired by Swedish student and climate activist Greta Thunberg and the Extinction Rebellion campaign group.

剑桥词典根据其Instagram账号上最能引起粉丝共鸣的“每日一词”选出了2019年度热词--升级再造。

The word upcycling – defined as the activity of making new furniture, objects, etc. out of old or used things or waste material – received more likes than any other Word of the Day (it was shared on 4 July 2019).
“升级再造”是指将旧的、用过的东西或废弃材料制作新家具、物品等的活动，它获得了最高的“每日一词”点赞数（该词为2019年7月4日的每日一词）。
评选原因
自2011年12月“升级再造”首次被录入剑桥词典以来，该词的查找频率增加了181%，仅去年一年的搜索量就增加了一倍。
这一现象反映了通过个人行动应对气候变化的趋势--纯素食（vegan）、弹性素食（flexitarian）和植物性饮食（plant-based diets）等。

美国在线词典（Dictionary）的2019年度热词是“存在主义的”，为何选择这个承载了诸多含义的词作为描述2019年的词汇呢？

We define the adjective existential in two senses. The first is “of or relating to existence.” Entering English in the late 1600s, this existential is often used when the fact of someone or something’s being—its very existence—is at stake. An existential threat to a species, for example, puts its continued existence in real, concrete peril.

The dictionary's entry for cancel culture describes it as "the attitudes within a community which call for or bring about the withdrawal of support from a public figure".
字典中对该词的解释是“一个群体内要求或导致公众人物不再受到支持的态度。”
评选原因
麦考瑞词典认为，“取消文化”在某种程度上也就是对公众人物进行封杀（wipe them out），是一种惩罚。
词典的“年度词汇”评选委员会表示，这种态度现在很普遍，以至于如今还有了一个专有名词，无论是好是坏，社会的‘取消文化’已经成为一种强大的力量。
并且这种情况通常出现在社交媒体。在社交媒体上，由于公众人物的某些不当行为，网友会迅速群起而攻之，要求对其进行封杀。
